News Corp's publishing arm to focus on losses at Times and Sunday Times

Losses at the Times and Sunday Times at an estimated £1m a week, is to be News corporations priority for News Corporation's potential separated publishing division – although any efforts to tighten integration between the two titles is likely to require a loosening of the undertakings given by Rupert Murdoch when he bought the newspapers.

My Opinion
I would say this shows that there is a decline in newspapers , but I don't think newspapers will die out any time soon, if ever. I think that this new and digital craze is not going to totally wipe out newspapers as digital software is not always reliable. Its likely for newspapers with a big name like Sunday Times and The Times to decline as the new and digital media revolution is happening, the smart idea would be to adapt to the change , but not to totally get rid of what is tradition and also precise and reliable news.

Sunday Times's circulation falls below 900,000 for the first time

This article discusses the statistics of Guardian, Sunday Times and others about their losses. The Sunday Times has been giving free newspapers in order to help the circulation of sales. They did this because that have fallen by 1% from November and re below the sales mark

My Opinion
That is peak , But as I said before its likely for these big name newspapers to decline because of new and digital media... They trying to save a lost battle. simple.

UK newspaper advertising facing bleak forecast for 2013

What is it about?

The ailing UK newspaper advertising market is set to get even worse next year with national titles forecast to face an almost 9% decline that will see display revenue fall below £1bn for the first time. The market is set to get worse in 2013

My opinion
What I don't understand about these newspapers is why are they trying?. THEIR AUDIENCE ARE NOW THE NEWS GIVERS/FEEDER !! WHATEVER!! . Like , we as people find out news instantly on social media sites and then newspapers delivers news a whole day after which is too late, especially with technology we live with nowadays . What I respect about some newspapers such as The Times etc is that it delivers news stories with full detail and information and we know its reliable and easy to believe.

Traffic to the BBC website since 1997

This is interesting I suppose. Dont really have an opinion on this one..

Story no- Million ' Why they getting so much money?'

Four BBC bosses get that dough.

A spokesman said 'They remain within a range that is proportionate to running a media organisation of this size. We continue to be mindful of how we spend public money and to drive down costs wherever possible'

Four bbc xecutive including Ben stephenson who is TV drama controller have all been given pay rises too 20% earlier this year. Hotel Bills have increased by third in just three months
Four BBC executives, including TV drama controller Ben Stephenson, were given pay rises of as much as 20% earlier this year, according to the corporation's latest quarterly expense and salaries report.Total expenses for managers ( senior ) rose by 1% in the last three months to £168.753.. Hotel expenses rose 31.7% compared to the previous three months.
Payrises totalling more than £60,00 were given to 4 executive earlier this year the biggest one being Stephenson..His salary is now 195,000 which was a pay rise of 20.6% increase. A BBC sposkewoman said that this was because stephenson was given an expanded role within his responsibility.
Karl Burnett, had an increase of £10,00 taking his salary to £128,900. This was due to her role being expanded  in the future media and audio operations.
Richard Thurston, the human resources director for BBC News Group who has now left the corporation, received a 13.5% pay rise of £15,000 to take his salary to £126,100.
Jenny Baxter, controller of production for BBC News, received an almost 4% boost of £4,545 to £121,200 for taking on "extended responsibilities".
The BBC spokeswoman said the total expense bill run up by senior managers was down 8% compared to the same three month period last year.

My Opinion.
I do not really understand why they were given pay rises? for what cause? because their role expanded. I as a lifeguard have my role expanded when I am asked to cover shifts on gym floor, or in the creche. Do I get a payrise ... NO? Why the extra money?

Is the media more democratic as a result of new technology?

Is the media more democratic as a result of new technology?

I believe Web 2.0 has opened up more doors to democracy in today’s society we have the ability to become producers as well as consumers, which is known as ‘Citizen Journalism’. For example an ordinary person can make a newsworthy story by simply posting a picture up on twitter and it becoming viral this was done when the plane landed into the Hudson River . User generated content such as YouTube allows ordinary people to broadcast newsworthy stories as well so people can view a less mediated story than what we are shown on the news,  an example of this would be the Ian Tomlinson case.  The web 2.0 is only available to some people due to the digital divide even though there is an increasing rise of modern new technology being used by people who are less fortunate than people who are wealthy, it still wouldn’t matter as the type of software they use would be more sophisticated than those who are less wealthy. I believe that Web 2.0 has given people more of a voice , and opportunity to share their thoughts by creating blogs, creating user generated content , having social networking sites with the ability to post something newsworthy with the chance of it going viral. This makes the media more democratic as people have the power to say what they want without laws or any other authority to stop them.

In the Age of Media Six Questions about Media and Participation

We are in an age of participatory media, ordinary people are no longer consumers but also producer. Web 2.0 gives us the consumers a chance to have our voices heard by blog's, speak to those in power , share knowledge and connect with people all over the world.
Tim O Reily ( 2001) invented web 2.0 after the web crash but the inventor of the world wide web ( Tim Berners Lee) said the the basic technological infrastructure of web 2.0 is not much different to web 1.0.
The times when cable TV and portable radios came about have been said that these technology changes were to bring people power and eventually undermine the people in power politically or the big corporations.
There is a danger to the type of technology determinism though, even though we have new technology which is having out voices being heard it depends what it is used for, by who? and how it is used.
People who regularly use the web 2.0 are the youth and more usually youth from a wealthy background even the though youth from a less wealthy background are still increasingly found to have computers in their homes it still restricts them too the sophistication of the software they use and therefore wont be able to produce some thing as good as people brought up in middle class. Young people are known to be the ' early adopters' of a new social networking site.It is found that girls are usually the ones to post blog's and boys post videos on YouTube. Next to question is how do these companies from the internet make their money if we as the consumers are becoming producers. Advertising is one of the ways in which a website can make their money, for example when you go on your computer you have cookies which then enable the advertisers to see what your searching on search engine like Google and then advertise those things which someone is searching. Soren Peterson said ' Loser Generated content' which is basically saying we as producers are labouring for the big corporations but for free. We put so much effort into designing a blog to advertise brands like Nike? for example the craze about the Nike trainer ' Blazers.

LEVESON ENQUIRY

David Cameron has told national newspaper editors they must implement the Leveson report recommendations in their entirety if the government is to hold off introducing a new press law. The prime minister gave them until Thursday to demonstrate they were making progress on agreeing a reformed structure of regulation. This means that if a solution is not discovered from this enquiry David Cameron will be forced to step in and implement a law to prevent things such as phone hackings from happening again.

Participation or Hegemony Summary

Web. 2.0 Designed by Tim O' Reilly has started real plurality within the media. We are no longer just the audience, we are the audience with a voice and now the ability to be the consumer of our voice. With the new web 2.0 justice and comfort is restored for example; The case of Ian Tomlinson was reported as the police medics were trying to help him survive due to his collapse not knowing that someone had filmed the attack of Ian tomlinson being hit by a police officer. This was shown to the news and the real report went out which ended in the police officer being sentenced for manslaughter.

In April 1979 Blair Peach was killed in similar circumstances, and to this day no one has been charged with his death. This was before web 2.0 , this goes to show that the

new 'we media' helps the society

and gives us more of a reality to what is going on in the world and not have mediated news but real stories.

Developments in new/digital media mean that audiences can now have access to a greater variety of views and values.  To what extent are audiences empowered by these

The internet has increased pluralism; it has provided the people with a platform to voice their opinions. Another advantage of new and digital media is that it “interprets censorship as damage and routes around it”(John Gilmore) therefore, it allows pluralism to flourish . The views and ideologies of political leaders and governments can now be challenged through the internet, by the internet. As Al Gore called the internet “Exciting and revolutionary” and went further to say it has had a “more profound impact than the printing press.”  Since 1991, from when the first website went online, ¼ of the world is now online and this number is expanding.  As Tim Bernes Lee said ‘let the people be free’ and this is exactly what the internet has provided, freedom. Many everyday things can now be done online for example banking (97% of bank transactions are done online in Estonia). New and digital media has provided the globe with a “New World Currency.” The web collapses distances.

Web 2.0  is essentially a medium that allows audiences to become producers of media texts. Anyone with a web connection can create and publish text (UGC) it has reduced the duty of gatekeeper, if not removed them completely. There are huge amounts of views and values available on the internet through "web-based software such as blogs". This is supportive of pluralism, which is a society of competing groups and interests.

What appears to be happening is that YouTube is now used more frequently as a commercial network for promotional and catch-up purposes that runs alongside, and probably dominates, the original, usually trivial, user-generated content.

We – the audience – no longer have to rely upon the token ‘access’ traditional media offered us, such as newspapers’ letter pages or radio phone-ins. Today we can easily produce texts ourselves, even if we seem to be more interested in mimicking traditional media by becoming YouTube celebrities, or watching music videos and/or television programmes by favourite artistsem predominant.

News story

£3,250 in his pocket

The BBC have now agreed to pay more than 3,000 for the outrageous accusations made to Lord Mc Alpine for child abuse.
It has been seen that the BBC has had complete control over the report, reported by Angus Stickler. It insisted that the BBC had had “complete control” over the report and that no one at the bureau other than Mr Stickler and his editor Iain Overton, who has since resigned, had any involvement.

,My opinion - I think this is fair :), no-one should be accused of child abuse for no reason and definitely not be accused from a couple of tweets. Rushing to conclusions just to have the BBC blamed for something to take the heat of New Night. Not Cool :(

Lord Mc Alpine Summary

News night Scandal Summary

The News night scandal is seen to be one of the biggest scandals within the past decade which started with the Jimmy Savile case. Once News night had enough evidence of the Jimmy Seville case they were due to have a tribute act for him , this of course was very controversial and they decided to opt out of revealing anything they believed would ruin their reputation. News night was already in shambles , but to add onto the brokenness of programme they decided to accuse Lord Mc Alpine of child abuse with evidence of tweets. These accusation were drastic and obviously wrong , which has caused a storm to a point were the show is at risk of being cancelled.

letter

Dear Mr Murdoch I am writing this letter to challenge the fact that you think it is acceptable to charge for news as I think it is immoral for the spreading of information to come at a cost.

First of all charging for online news content will lead to a more democratic society as people may not be able to afford to read several different articles all which may come at a cost. This would mean people are more likely to stick to their subscribed news provider.

Also, adding a cost to online content could lead to a decline in people receiving news from professional institutes and instead turn to each other through channels such as social networking sites e.g twitter and Facebook  Not only will this reduce the quality of news produced by also lead to less reliable information being circulated.

In my opinion charging for online content will not be popular due to the fact that it rarely costs any money to publish things online, therefore people are unlikely to support and trust information from an institute who's aim is to make money, also the fact that most content online from social networking sites to youtube are free therefore why should we have to pay for news.

I am hoping this letter will make you realise the negative effect charging for news will have and i hope to hear from you soon.

Yours sincerely,

Ruby

The end of BBC Ceefax

38 Years to say Goodbye

The world first teletext service ' Ceefax' has come to an end after 38 years of loyal service. It was called Ceefax because viewers would be able to ' see the facts' of any story of the day. Ceefax was developed by BBC engineers who wanted to find a way to enable viewers who were deaf to enjoy BBC programmes

Ceefax would give the latest updates what with what went on around the world, with sport, shows, music charts and eventually provided a detailed recipes to suit all types of audiences.

The audience peaked in the 1990s when it had around 20 million viewers in one week. When the national lottery launched in 1994 a lot of people , use to win from using the Ceefax service.
After the digital switch over , almost straight away there were stories about Ceefax closing down
for good.

Harriet Harman who is the labours deputy head said ' Ceefax is a great national institution, and its sad to bid goodbye to a service which gave so many access to news, sport, TV listings and much else besides But with the end of one era comes the start of another as the digital switch-over is completed  people can access more channels, and interactive services which are the successors of Ceefax."

My opinion - I think that the end of Ceefax is quite sad as I remember sitting with my grand-father checking plane numbers on Ceefax ,waiting to know what times relatives would be flying home. It was a loyal service for everything. With a new era of new and digital media, we have a better service with loads more access to loads more information.

Hyper reality
Hyper reality is a way of describing what we see as ' real ' in a world where media can shape and filter an original event or experience.  An example of hyper reality is what we are shown in the news, we are shown what is not really reality but what our minds choose to be real.

Story of the week

RADIO 4 IS BRINGING IT ALL BACK !

The station notices it is getting quite boring, and so they are tapping into the past and bringing in an Archive of the old presenter Alistair Cooke. Alistair Cooke is known for his dramatic story telling and his excellent presenting skills, he bought interesting stories to the radio show as seen first hand by himself.

My opinion - I think this is positive, technology is dramatically advancing and improving. By them making the archive accessible on-line , it will make it more reachable to a wider audience, by making an information and entertainment website it should be a  positive outcome.

Rise of UGC Question

What is meant by the term ‘citizen journalist’?
-A normal person to society who has captured footage that is newsworthy.

What was one of the first examples of news being generated by ‘ordinary people’?
-Rodney King

List some of the formats for participation that are now offered by news organisations.
-Blogs, Comment box, polls, Q&A, chat rooms and social media such as twitter and Facebook.

What is one of the main differences between professionally shot footage and that taken first-hand (UGC)?
-Professional shot footage is usually edited afterwards not showing the audience the reality of what was shot. UCG footage is what is taken at first hand with no editing meaning it is not heavily mediated, it brings realness to a story.

What is a gatekeeper?
-Someone who has the ability to choose what is being broadcasted or shown in the media.

How has the role of a gatekeeper changed?
-Yes and No. Reasons why the role of a gatekeeper has changed is because UGC. No – because gatekeepers still have to decide whether what is being provided by a citizen journalist is acceptable to be shown in the media …

What is one of the primary concerns held by journalists over the rise of UGC?
-That their jobs will be at risk, with the constant rise of UGC it shows a world without it being unmediated, which by far a lot more people prefer.

James Murdoch

Rupert Murdoch's second son tumbles down the list as he loses much of his UK influence in the wake of the hacking scandal

James Murdoch slowly loosing his popularity among the UK, he stepped down as chairman of BSKSB just six weeks after giving up his role at the News international. Now its official no Murdoch occupies a top position at satellite broadcaster since 1999. James was soon to take over his fathers business but after the Phone hacking scandal , that will not be the case any more.

My opinion-
I think that the nation shouldnt judge James as a shadow of his father, and we should give him just as much chance of him being the owner of the satellite broadcaster. I think we have just scared him away from the media light , instead of encouraging him to carry on a very successful business.

Critical Investigation Analysis

1) An honest assessment of your presentation to class

I think my presentation had some good information and well made points. I tried to make my presentation as informative as possible. It would've been better if I included more media language and more research with the potential of putting it in my critical investigation.

My first thoughts for my critical investigation would be ; I dont know

Possible ideas for your linked production piece ; I dont know

I wanted to do the film , but I also want something I am actually going to be interested in and not get bored.

Bush Homework 2&3

Megan Stammers gone missing..

A 15 year old girl went missing with a 30 year old French teacher.

Personal Opinion -  I think this story is being handled too softly and the police are not giving the public enough information which is making us think it isn't being handled well.  They are making it seem like Megan is in love with this teacher and has agreed to go to France with him without informing her family. The police have stated that she is not at risk which is not at all the case as they do not know what is really happening. I think with any child that goes missing it should be a high risk and be handled very seriously because the possibilities are endless. The police do not know if she was forced to go with the teacher, if there was abuse involved or if it was her own decision, so therefore they shouldn't rush to conclusion to think that it is just a typical teenage run away.

Sexual abuse Allegations

A former Top of the pops presenter has been accused by several different women of sexual abuse which happened years ago.

Personal Opinion - I think this should be forgotten about because it happened in the past , it makes me think that the allegations are a bit false, reason because the women should have come out with it at the time the supposed ' Sexual abuse ' was happening instead of years after, it doesn't seem truthful. Especially how all these women are just creeping up with the stories like they all want to get at him now. But he is DEAD. So really there is no point.  There investigation for what cause? none.
nothing can be done, so they are wasting time and money

Summer Research Project

Summer Research Project

Why did I get married?

Media RepresentationsWho is being represented?Terry & Diane
Patricia & Gavin
Marcus & Angela
Sheriff Troy & Sheila
Mike & Trina
These are the main characters of the movie; they are all couple who are friends who go away every year on a retreat to relax and reconcile the connection of friendship and marriage they are represented as couples which are married and they each have their own problems within their marriage.  In some couples marriage is represented positively in other couples marriage is represented negatively.

In what way?
Terry & Diane they are represented as a married couple with trust issues and maternity issues.  They are representing a negative aspect of marriage as marriage should be filled with trust, family building and happiness. Diane kept from her husband that she had been sterilized and was unable to have children when on the other hand her husband forever longed for a child. The woman in the couple is represented as being deceitful and dishonest as she tricked her husband into thinking they were trying for a baby when in fact she was unable to fertilize at all.

Patricia & Gavin
Patricia and Gavin are represented as the perfect married couple in the movie. They have been together for the longest and have seen through most problems within their marriage in a positive way.  They had a first child who died due to a car accident. In this movie we see that Gavin secretly blames Patricia for not putting their baby in the car seat properly, which breaks Patricia down to her core. Unlike the other couples these two keep their problems away from their friends and resolve it in private.

Marcus & Angela
Marcus and Angela are seen as the couple that argues publically and always has problems regardless but at the same time seen as the most intimate couple in the movie. They are also represented as dishonest and untrustworthy. Angela is represented as the wife who is addicted to alcohol and has an evil mind-set and Marcus is represented as the old pimp who is married but can’t get rid of his old mojo.  Marcus and Angela love each other and even they are seen always arguing, we can see that in the movie. They both are unfaithful in their relationship which results in yet another argument for them but the love is so solid between these two that that they remember what they have been through and come to a conclusion to forgive and forget. They are represented negatively regarding the normal morals of marriage but in this modern day gives a positive light to their situation that says whatever is wrong in a marriage or a relationship ,as long as the loves strong you can get through it.

Sheriff Troy, Sheila and Mike
Sheila and Mike are seen to be broken, dysfunctional and near enough divorced. They are seen as the negative side to a marriage. Sheila is a woman who is insecure about her weight and also not confident when knowing if her husband (mike) loves her, she is a woman who is strong but it represented as weak when it comes to love. Mike is represented as a stereotypical view of a black man. The normal unfaithful married man, who brings the woman (Trina) who he is having an affair with on their annual retreat. In the movie Mike is brought out over dinner about having an affair with Trina, the faithful Sheila is brought to tears and is full of anger. These two are the only couple that do not resolve their problems and instead result in a divorce which is negatively representing marriage.

By whom?
These characters are being represented in this way by the director and writer of this film which is Tyler Perry.
Why are the subjects being represented in this way?
The subjects are being represented in this way to show the negative and positive views on marriage and friendship and also the importance of it. Tyler Perry is known for his deep morals being his films and plays, his motto as a director is to make people learn about us (humans) as individuals and instead of us agreeing with what’s wrong about each other to agree with what’s right and accepts every one for who they are. One of his quotes is “forget all the reasons why it won’t work and believe the one reason why it will” He is a positive role model to society and teaches lesson in his movies.  In this movie Tyler Perry tries to emphasize the importance of being married and sticking by the vows you made at the beginning of the marriage, no matter what happens throughout a marriage you should stick by the very important vows.
Is the representation fair and accurate? The representation of the couples is not accurate and not really fair as well. Not every marriage consists of these problems, and not every marriage stays monogamous. I think the representation of marriage in this movie is quite negative but at the same time shows a positive side to marriage with the making up. The accuracy of the representation of marriage in this movie is to a high extent because every marriage has problems without a doubt in society.

Media Languages and Forms
What are the denotative and connotative levels of meaning? The connotative meaning of this movie is through the cultural experience. We see that every character in this movie is of black ethnicity which then makes the reader think that every black marriage has to be loud and argumentative. We see especially from Angela, she is seen as a violent wife which throws objects at her husband to resolve a situation. Tyler Perry has tapped into the black culture in this movie.
The denotations of these movies would be that every marriage has its problems, which is the simplest message we get from ‘Why did I get married’.
What is the significance of the text’s connotations?
The significant of the texts connotations regarding this movie, would be the insight in the black culture. Black love is seen as something so bold and beautiful, yet hard to stay in and hard to cope with as individuals which is expressed in this movie. Also we see in this movie the black culture being expressed when Patricia says ‘no cooking is better than a black persons cooking’ and her husband replies ‘as long as you don’t cook grits’ and each wife is in the kitchen cooking their own part to the dinner. In the black culture grits is the only food known to be cooked not to eat but to be used as a weapon on the current partner.  The food is oven hot and is only use to put over the partners body

What are the non-verbal structures of meaning in the text?
(E.g. gesture, facial expression, positional communication, clothing, props etc.)?

Facial expression – at the beginning of the movie the facial expressions where happy for , Patricia and Gaven and Terry and Diane. But not so happy for Angela and Marcus, Sheila and Mike. This is because the couple arrive arguing this introduces what to expect about these two couples with the movie. Positional communication between the couple were always close, even with Angela and Marcus arguing, they were seen as the most intimate couple throughout the movie. The body language between Sheila and Mike was always distant this was because Mike had lost his feelings towards Sheila and Sheila as insecure about her body and was insecure with what her husband thinks of her.

What is the significance of Mise-en-scene/sets/settings (CLAMPS)?
The significance of:
C - What the characters wore was very significant as the audience could tell their wealth and how successful they are, but that is not the case for all characters. For example everyone walks into the resort with designer suitcases and the less wealthy couple being Sheila and Mike came by car and not aeroplane and were in normal everyday cloths especially for Sheila who is more or less been abandoned by her husband.
L - The lighting for the characters was very significant in the film. For happier times in the movie for example High lighting was used  when they all meet up and have their first dinner and they all talk about there year that had passed. Low key lighting was used during the arguments of the couples as its seen as a dark and depressing moment.

A - The choice of actors and the characters they played were significant. As this is an African american film ,Tyler Perry decided to use different characters to emphasize the whole black culture.

M - The make up that the actors wore were very simplistic and natural nothing was really added onto the actors to face to emphasize glamour or masculinity. The facial expressions suited the genre. Everything they did wasn't unexpected.

P - There weren't many props in this film unlike other genres like horrors or humour they kept the film as real as possible, the most props they used in this film would be kitchen wear and Angela's bottles of wine she was consistently going through.

S - The setting is suppose to be set in a different country to Atlanta which they are usually based in. It is set in Alaska , which is a place full of snow.  This makes the audience think that the couples cant really escape from where they vacating.
L - The lighting for the characters was very significant in the film. For happier times in the movie for example High lighting was used  when they all meet up and have their first dinner and they all talk about there year that had passed. Low key lighting was used during the arguments of the couples as its seen as a dark and depressing moment.
Costume:
What work is being done by the sound track/commentary/language of the text?
The sound track has a main effect in the movie, the music signifies the mood and lets the audience know what is  going on. For example when the break up between Sheila and Mike happen there a slow ballad song by Boy2Men " To the end of the road" this adds emotion to what is going on with their relationship and also relates to it.

What are the dominant images and iconography, and what is their relevance to the major themes of the text?
The dominant images and iconography used in ' why did i get married ' is wedding rings, a lot of together scenes of each couple. I suppose Tyler Perry tried to emphasize the fact that they are really good friends who have developed relationship within their friendships so that is why he creates them to all be in a house together and have different stories within the same place. Iconographic images was a homely setting, a place for a wife and husband.

What sound and visual techniques are used to convey meaning (e.g. camera positioning, editing; the ways that images and sounds are combined to convey meaning)?
Sound is used very much in this movie, and its used to tell the story more. For happy moments usually Gospel music will be played , this give an uplifting mood, and maybe some hope for relationships. The visual techniques used which conveyed a lot of meaning , was when for example when each couple found out what their partners have been keeping from them. A shot that was very vivid and meant to catch the emotion of the Actress was Sheila and Mikes argument. The director used a close up shot to emphasize Sheila's tears and anger as you can see through her facial expressions.

Narrative
How is the narrative organised and structured?
The narrative is organised in a way where there are 5 couples who are married and are going away to clear their heads and remember why they got married. But instead of it being a peaceful retreat to a different country it turns out to be a whole shamble and potential relationship breaker

How is the audience positioned in relation to the narrative?

The audience are positioned to seeing 5 troubled relationships and in some ways the audience may be able to identify with what is going on in the narrative. As mentioned before Tyler Perry is known for having deep meaningful messages behind his movie's. The audience can relate and learn and maybe even resolve a situation they may be going through.

How are characters portrayed? What is their narrative function? How are heroes and villains created?

Each character have their own very distinct personality. Angela is delineated as someone that is loud, argumentative and an alcoholic. Marcus is seen to be a cheater but someone who loves his wife dearly, Sheila is seen to be self concious and over emotional but strong as the same time. Mike is delineated as someone who is unfaithful and un-sensitive. Gavin is seen to be the bread winner who is supporter with his wife and generally loves his little family. Patricia is seen to be quiet and loyal also someone who is a peacemaker within her and her friends relationships. Terry is delineated as someone you who doesn't like arguments with his wife, but is loyal, honest and has a lot of love to give. Diane is seen to be someone who is secretive and not as honest as her husband is to her. The heroes created in this movie is the characters themselves they each resolve their problems and remember love is before anything. The villain created in this movie was Mike as he and Sheila were the only couple unsuccessful in their relationship. The reason he is seen as the villain is because he doesn't show any sort of sympathy towards his unfaithfulness and carries on having his affair even on the retreat.

What techniques of identification and alienation are employed?

Identification has been employed in this film with the story line , every person who is married can relate to the problems and arguments that happen in marriage. The technique of alienation that is employed is the break up between Sheila and Mike.

What is the role of such features as sound, music, iconography, genre, mise-en-scene, editing etc within the narrative?

Sound - Be it non diegetic or diegetic is very important it adds to the story and helps tell more of the story. Music - again emphasizes the emotion of what is going on. Iconography- helps bring the movie to life and be able to relate with the audience more, for example if what you expect to see is there to see you can identify it and it become more realistic. Genre - The genre of a movie should be quite distinct from the beginning of the movie and I think that was easily given off with the introduction to each couple , carrying suitcases to a resort. The genre for this movie would be a romantic/drama.

What are the major themes of the narrative? What values/ideologies does it embody?

The major themes of the narrative is having a stable relationship but showing that however long a relationship can hold it still can be broken depending on how much love is solid in the relationship.

Diane and Terry are both romantically and dramatically determined as they love more than argue but when they argue its usually a minor situation within their own disagreements.

Patricia and Gavin are very much romantically determined , they are seen as the perfect couple and even if they do argue it is very gracefully not dramatic at all.

  • How do you, as an audience member, read and evaluate the text? To what extent is your reading and evaluation influenced by your age, gender, background et

Me as an audience member I look and evaluate the text as a lesson to learn for the future. I have learnt that divorce is last resort in any future relationship. Heart ache is something to painful to go into in the future and something I myself as an audience member never want to experience. Myself as a female I think it build barriers within future relationships especially as my ethnicity background is the same as the characters but it gives me hope that other female with the same ethnicity as me can relate and build strength within themselves. For my age I feel its not really relevant for my age group as no serious relationships she be happening now, but it does help for future reference.
